Orthopedists Save the Hands of a 5-Year-Old Boy After Injury

Orthopedic surgeons successfully saved both hands of a 5-year-old boy after a severe injury in a chaff cutter.

During agricultural work, the boy from Lviv region injured both of his hands. Initially, one hand got caught in the chaff cutter, and while trying to free it, the child severely injured the other hand. He was urgently transported by ambulance to the hospital.

Diagnosis upon admission: multiple lacerated wounds and skin defects of both hands, open fractures of the fingers, partial loss of soft tissue.

A team of orthopedic surgeons, including Andriy Kostyuk and Taras Moskal, performed a series of complex operations. The doctors literally “assembled” the child’s fingers piece by piece, and the finger fragments were fixed using pins. Later, when everything healed, the pins were removed.

Due to the loss of a skin area on one of the fingers, another operation was performed – a skin graft taken from the front surface of the thigh. A special device, a dermatome, was used for this, allowing for the precise and quality acquisition of the necessary thin layer of skin for transplantation.

“The boy is very restless, but his regenerative abilities are fantastic! In preschool children, this is often the case – the younger the child, the faster everything heals,” explains orthopedic surgeon Andriy Kostyuk.

After a series of surgeries, the boy underwent a rehabilitation course aimed at restoring the functions of both hands. Thanks to the professional work of the doctors, the functionality of both hands was preserved.

Attention, parents! Doctors emphasize: similar cases are especially frequent during the summer period, during fieldwork. Please be extremely attentive to children – one second of inattention can cost them their health!
