A Scooter Fall Led to a Complex Surgery

17-year-old Oleksii from Belz, Lviv region, ended up in the hospital after a serious fall from an electric scooter.

The boy’s friends immediately called an ambulance, and a few hours later, he was admitted to the Children’s Medical Center. There, a team of doctors conducted a full examination, including X-ray, CT scan, and clinical tests. “The team of doctors is very coordinated. We arrived and were immediately accepted, everything was examined, X-ray and CT were done. The attitude is very good – they constantly come, ask how everything is, and give advice”, – said the boy’s mother.

The diagnosis included a closed intra-articular comminuted fracture of the proximal part of the tibia with displacement, a fracture of the right clavicle without displacement, a bruise of the second rib on the right, a bruise of soft tissues of the face, multiple abrasions, and a traumatic brain injury.

The surgical treatment was performed by a team of orthopedic traumatologists. “During the operation, we conducted a revision of the knee joint, excluded intra-articular damage (the menisci and cruciate ligaments were intact), during the revision we found a significant depression (impression) and displacement of part of the joint surface of the tibia. An open reposition of the bone fragments was performed, the defect was filled with allotransplants, and internal fixation of the fracture was done with an anatomically modeled lockable stable metal structure. The patient faces a long rehabilitation period and further removal of the structure after fracture fusion”, – explained orthopedic traumatologist Oleh Tokai.

Oleksii faces a recovery period, gradual loading on the leg, and physical rehabilitation. Doctors predict full recovery of limb function.

Doctors remind: “Riding electric scooters is not a game, but a responsibility. Always use a helmet, knee pads, and avoid speeding. One careless move can have serious consequences”.
