In Drohobych, 111 people donated blood during an outreach donor campaign

A large-scale blood donation campaign has once again taken place in Drohobych with the participation of a mobile team from the Lviv Regional Blood Centre. In just a few hours of the mobile unit’s work, 111 residents of the community donated blood to meet the needs of medical institutions and military medics.

The donation was, as usual, held on the grounds of the hospital campus. The event was organised by the Lviv Regional Blood Centre together with the Municipal Non-Commercial Enterprise “Drohobych City Hospital No. 1”. Since the beginning of the year, the mobile blood service unit has already come to Drohobych for the fourth time, as the demand for donor blood and its components remains very high throughout Ukraine.

The mobile team regularly travels to different localities in the region to encourage more people to become donors. In a specially equipped vehicle, donors undergo a preliminary examination: their blood pressure and glucose levels are measured, their blood group is determined and other necessary tests are carried out. Only after this do specialists allow them to donate blood.

Medical staff of the First City Hospital, service personnel, rescuers, employees of the executive committee of Drohobych City Council, representatives of private businesses and other concerned residents of the community joined the campaign. For participants’ convenience, the hospital arranged online registration in advance so that everyone could choose a convenient time for donation.

Andrii Kotsiuba, General Director of the Municipal Non-Commercial Enterprise “Drohobych City Hospital No. 1”, thanked everyone who came to donate blood and separately acknowledged the support of the Drohobych District Police Department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Lviv Region, the Mobile Rapid Response Rescue Centre “Lviv” of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, the 5th State Fire and Rescue Unit of the 7th State Fire and Rescue Detachment of the Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Lviv Region, and the 2nd Special-Purpose Emergency Rescue Detachment.

To ensure donors’ comfort, the hospital provided participants in the campaign with hot tea and biscuits. In terms of equipment, the mobile donation unit is as close as possible to a stationary blood centre: it is fitted with four special chairs, allowing four donors to be received at the same time, and it also has a mini-laboratory.

During a single procedure, specialists collect approximately 350 to 450 ml of blood. After collection, the donated blood is transported to the Lviv Regional Blood Centre, where it is processed into components and distributed among medical institutions in line with their requests and needs.
