At Saint Anne’s Hospital of the First Medical Association of Lviv, which locals often call the Mechnykova Maternity Hospital, twins have been born — a little brother and sister, Lukyan and Oleksandra. The babies were delivered just one minute apart.
The infants developed as a dichorionic diamniotic twin pregnancy — each child had their own amniotic sac and a separate placenta. The pregnancy lasted 38 weeks, and the woman was monitored at the hospital’s antenatal clinic under the supervision of obstetrician-gynaecologist Tetiana Pylypets.
Because the first baby was in breech presentation and the second in a transverse lie, the medical team decided to carry out a planned caesarean section. The operation was performed by the director of Saint Anne’s Hospital, obstetrician-gynaecologist Svitlana Havryliuk, together with the head of the Department of Pregnancy Pathology and Extragenital Pathology, obstetrician-gynaecologist Anna Mala.
Lukyan was born first, weighing 3,550 g and measuring 54 cm in length. One minute later, Oleksandra was born, weighing 2,900 g and measuring 51 cm. According to the doctors, both the mother and the newborns are feeling well.
Saint Anne’s Hospital of the First Medical Association of Lviv specialises in women’s health and reproductive medicine. The facility includes maternity, gynaecological, and clinical-diagnostic departments, a department of pregnancy pathology and extragenital pathology, as well as a reproductive medicine unit with a cryobank.
