At the municipal non-profit enterprise of the Lviv Regional Council “Clinical Centre of Paediatric Medicine”, doctors have operated on a 3-year-old girl who was found to have a rare congenital bile duct cyst. After the operation, the child is feeling well and is already at home with her parents.
The girl was brought to the centre from Lviv’s infectious diseases hospital due to yellowing of the skin and the whites of her eyes. At first, doctors suspected viral hepatitis, but subsequent tests did not confirm this diagnosis.
At the paediatric medicine centre, the patient underwent an ultrasound scan and magnetic resonance imaging. The examinations revealed a bile duct cyst – a congenital defect that obstructed the normal outflow of bile and over time led to the development of jaundice.
“This is a congenital malformation of the bile ducts, which is extremely rare – approximately one case per 100–150 thousand births,” said Ihor Hulavskyi
According to the doctors, the condition did not manifest itself until the age of three, while the cyst was gradually increasing in size.
To restore the flow of bile, the centre’s medical team performed surgery and completely removed the cyst. The operation was joined by surgeon Andriy Chykailo from the University Hospital of Danylo Halytskyi Lviv National Medical University, who has experience of carrying out similar procedures in adult patients.
The postoperative period passed without complications. The child was discharged home and will continue to undergo routine ultrasound examinations approximately once every three months to monitor the condition of the bile ducts.
