At the municipal non-profit enterprise of the Lviv Regional Council “Lviv Regional Clinical Perinatal Centre”, doctors have performed a complex intrauterine operation on a pregnant woman expecting twins. The patient came to Lviv from another region, and the intervention was carried out at 25 weeks of pregnancy.
According to the institution, the pregnancy was complicated by the fact that both babies shared a single placenta. Because of the common blood vessels, blood was distributed unevenly between the foetuses, creating serious risks for the development of each baby.
To stop the abnormal blood flow between the babies, doctors used specialised equipment to seal the vessels through which the uneven blood exchange was taking place. The operation was performed under anaesthesia directly in the amniotic cavity. The perinatal centre notes that the initial results of the intervention are positive, and specialists will continue to monitor the course of the pregnancy closely.
“Patients from all over Ukraine with complex pregnancies can turn to the Lviv Perinatal Centre. Our specialists carry out the necessary examinations, determine further steps and, if required, perform intrauterine operations,” the doctors note.
The institution emphasises that it has the necessary equipment and experience to provide highly specialised care to pregnant women with severe complications.
