At the municipal non-profit enterprise of the Lviv Regional Council “Lviv Regional Clinical Perinatal Centre”, doctors performed a complex operation on a newborn girl with omphalocele (umbilical hernia) — a congenital defect in which part of the internal organs is located outside the abdominal cavity.
Doctors informed the mother about the defect as early as the 12th week of pregnancy. The child was born at 38–39 weeks by planned caesarean section, and her birth weight was 1,960 grams.
The surgeons carried out the first operation the very next day after delivery. Due to the large size of the hernia, they decided to carry out the treatment in two stages. During the second operation, the doctors returned the organs to the abdominal cavity. After the procedures, the baby was under the constant supervision of neonatologists and paediatric surgeons.
The medical facility reported that on the 41st day of life the girl was discharged home with a weight of 2,350 grams and is expected to return for routine check-ups at the department of medical rehabilitation for premature and small children.
