At the Lviv Perinatal Centre, 19 operations were performed on babies before birth in six months

At the municipal non-commercial enterprise of the Lviv Regional Council “Lviv Regional Clinical Perinatal Centre”, the results of work for the nine months of 2026 were summed up and the development of key areas of medical care was discussed. This was the focus of the institution’s medical council.

The centre’s medical director, Liudmyla Mykolaichuk, presented the main performance indicators, analysed the work of the departments and trends in service provision. A separate section was devoted to the development of foetal medicine, which was launched at the institution in March 2026.

According to the deputy director for quality of medical activity, Nataliia Veresniuk, in the first six months of this area of work, the centre’s specialists performed 19 foetal surgical interventions – operations carried out on a baby before birth, in the mother’s womb. In particular, doctors performed an operation to stop pathological blood flow between the foetuses of twins at the 25th week of pregnancy.

Another important area of the centre’s work remains the treatment of infertility using assisted reproductive technologies. The head of the relevant department, Anna Markevych, reported that the success rate of treatment since the beginning of the year has consistently exceeded 60%.

The institution has also recorded a 40% increase in the number of patients who used the biomaterial cryopreservation service – freezing and storage of biological material for future use. For Ukraine’s defenders, this procedure is provided free of charge under the Medical Guarantees Programme.

“Given the nationwide demographic trends, our main task remains not only to improve quantitative indicators, but also to strengthen patients’ trust, refine medical processes and enhance the quality of care. I thank the team for managing to maintain a high level of service, comfort and humanity alongside professionalism and the quality of medical services” — Mariia Malachynska.

The management of the Lviv Regional Clinical Perinatal Centre stresses that it will continue to develop highly specialised areas of care for pregnant women and newborns, as well as infertility treatment programmes for patients in the region.
