16-year-old from Lviv recovers hand after injury

16-year-old Volodya from Lviv is recovering his hand after an injury sustained while cutting cabbage.

A month ago, the young Lviv resident was helping his mother salt cabbage when the knife accidentally slipped and deeply cut his finger. He felt almost no pain at that time, but the finger did not bend, which concerned him. His parents were worried, so Volodya sought medical help at the Children’s Medicine Center.

“Volodya had injuries to both the superficial and deep flexor of the fourth finger in the so-called second zone of the hand. It is difficult to perform tendon repair in this area due to anatomical features. But fortunately, the nerves were not injured, and the boy sought medical attention in time. The surgical intervention was successful and without complications,” said Bohdan Romanyshyn, head of the Specialized Surgery Clinic at the Center.

The doctor adds that traumatic cuts with knives or glass in children occur quite often. They are usually well treated if the patient seeks help in time. The sooner the doctor sees the injury, the easier it is to stitch and repair the tendon. In cases where tendon and nerve repair is not performed within three weeks of the injury, significantly more complex staged reconstructive surgeries on the hand have to be done.

Volodya is in his final year of school and is actively preparing for the national examination. “It’s good that I injured my left hand – it doesn’t interfere with studying,” he says with a smile. His parents admit they were most scared at the moment they saw the finger “not responding.” Now that their son is already regaining movement, they finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Currently, the boy is continuing active rehabilitation to restore full range of motion in his finger and hand. A few more weeks of work lie ahead, but Volodya is optimistic – he wants to fully recover his hand as soon as possible to better prepare for his final exams.
