OKHMATDYT surgeons successfully operated on an 8-year-old boy with foreign bodies in the large intestine
It happened as a result of watching a video on TikTok. In Lviv, doctors removed a wire from an 8-year-old boy’s intestines
The parents brought the child to the emergency department of our hospital with a complaint of foreign bodies in the anus. During the examination, the doctors saw a metal wire, and during the operation, they also found a Lego element in the sigmoid colon. As a result, the colon mucosa was damaged. Fortunately, there was no perforation. The operation was a success!
“If a sharp object damages the rectum or sigmoid colon, it is possible to surgically repair the defect, i.e. suture the wound, within 6 hours. And if the time of presence of a foreign body in the colon exceeds this time and there is a perforation, then the surgical intervention ends with the removal of the unnatural anus to the anterior abdominal wall, and treatment takes a long time, including rehabilitation, healing of the traumatic injury to the rectum.
After that, another intervention is required – a colonic anastomosis to restore the intestinal patency,” said paediatric surgeon Oksana Horbach.
Doctors emphasise that such behaviour can be very dangerous for health. There is a risk of developing faecal peritonitis.
“As a rule, school-age children do such things deliberately to draw attention to themselves or to express some kind of protest. In this case, the boy explained that he did it after watching a video on TikTok.
We would like to draw parents’ attention to such cases and advise them to control the content your child views, as well as to monitor the child’s psychological state in order to detect possible problems in time,” added paediatric surgeon Nazar Havrylyshyn.
