At the Mother and Child Clinic of the Danilo Halytskyi LNMU University Hospital, doctors performed an emergency caesarean section on a 32-year-old patient from Lviv region and saved the lives of both mother and baby. The woman, Olena Bozheiko, at 40 weeks of pregnancy, was found to have a critically high blood pressure of 200/110 mmHg, bleeding and the onset of labour.
This was her third birth by caesarean section, so the situation was complicated by two scars on the uterus from previous operations. Without delay, the doctors stabilised the patient’s condition and carried out urgent surgery.
Head of the Department of Extragenital Pathology and Pregnancy Pathology at the Mother and Child Clinic, Yurii Burak, noted that at the time of hospitalisation the elevated blood pressure posed an immediate threat to the lives of both mother and baby.
The operation resulted in the birth of a baby girl, Oleksandra, weighing 5,000 grams and measuring 58 centimetres in length. A multidisciplinary team from the Clinic was involved in the delivery: obstetrician-gynaecologists Yuliia Diachkova and Khrystyna Tsytsialo, neonatologist doctor Lesia Komarnytska, as well as anaesthetists, operating theatre nurses and other specialists.
This is already Olena’s third daughter. The elder girls, Zlata and Karolina, were also born with a high birth weight u2014 4.9 kg and 4.5 kg respectively. Newborn Oleksandra has set a new family record u2014 5 kilograms.
During the pregnancy, ultrasound results repeatedly indicated that the parents were expecting a boy, so after the operation the woman was astonished to learn that a girl had been born.
“I was sure it would be a boy, because that is what the ultrasounds showed. When the doctors said that a girl had been born, I couldn’t believe it. And when I found out that she weighed five kilograms, I was even more surprised. I am very grateful to all the doctors who were there, supported me and helped us. I felt safe and knew that we were in good hands,” says Olena Bozheiko.
Both the mother and little Oleksandra are currently feeling well and are preparing to be discharged from the University Hospital.
