Saved Life: How Otolaryngologists Helped a 9-Year-Old Boy with a Complication After Otitis
👂 The consequences could have been catastrophic. Otolaryngologists at our Center saved the life of a 9-year-old boy with a severe complication after otitis.
👉 In medicine, the law of paired cases often works, and recently our doctors once again witnessed this in practice. In our Children’s Medicine Center at the Otolaryngology Clinic, there were immediately two cases with the same complication – mastoiditis that developed after otitis. In the first case, mastoiditis developed typically. But in the second case with 9-year-old Mark from Lviv, everything was rapid and atypical.
Surgical Intervention
At first, as in most cases of otitis, ear inflammation began. However, when severe headache, nausea, vomiting, and worsening otitis symptoms appeared, the parents understood that the situation was very serious. After consulting with a pediatrician, the family headed to our Center. When the CT scan at our Center showed a complication — inflammation of the sigmoid sinus with thrombosis and an abscess surrounding this sinus, the doctors performed surgery immediately.
🔎 The sigmoid sinus is a large vessel that drains venous blood from the head to the heart. The sinus lesion developed rapidly, and without urgent help, the situation could have become catastrophic. Fedir Yurochko, head of the Pediatric Otolaryngology Clinic, emphasized: “Thus, we eliminated the serious complication and saved the boy’s life.”
Importance of Timely Medical Attention
Mark’s mother, recalling that time, says: “It started as a typical otitis. First, the pediatricians prescribed ear drops. But when a sleepless night and the pain began to radiate to the head, we realized we needed to see a doctor again. The pediatrician advised going to the hospital. It’s good that we turned to ‘Ohmatdyt’, they helped us here and we really liked it.”
❗️ Our doctors emphasize the importance of timely seeking an otolaryngologist at the first signs of complications. If you notice symptoms such as unbearable ear pain, high fever, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headache, facial nerve dysfunction (asymmetrical face), swelling around the ear — do not delay, see a doctor immediately! This can be a sign of serious complications that require urgent treatment.
