At the Mother and Child Clinic of the University Hospital of Danylo Halytskyi LNMU in Lviv, doctors performed a complex combined operation on 26-year-old Diana Vanevska from Sambir district. Under a single anaesthetic, the medical team simultaneously performed a caesarean section and hernioplasty for a recurrent ventral hernia.
At the time of hospitalisation, the patient was at 37 weeks of her third pregnancy. She had previously undergone two operations for hernias of the anterior abdominal wall, but during the current pregnancy a recurrence developed and a recurrent ventral hernia formed.
The woman said that during pregnancy she began to experience pain in her side and lower abdomen, after which she turned to this particular facility. During the examination, doctors detected a hernia which the patient had not been aware of before.
Following consultations with obstetrician-gynaecologist Zhanna Saling, head of the Department of Extragenital Pathology and Pregnancy Pathology of the Mother and Child Clinic, Yurii Burak, and surgeon Petro Vuitsyk, it was decided to carry out a combined surgical intervention. During the operation, an endoprosthetic mesh was used to reinforce the defect in the abdominal wall.
Hernioplasty for a recurrent ventral hernia in this case was complicated by the presence of previous postoperative scars, the recurrent nature of the disease and the particular course of the pregnancy. According to surgeon Petro Vuitsyk, the patient had a hernial defect with a diameter of up to 5 centimetres, which required an especially meticulous approach.
Combining the caesarean section and hernioplasty in a single operation enabled the woman to undergo only one anaesthetic and a single postoperative recovery period. This reduces the strain on the body and supports faster rehabilitation after childbirth.
As a result of the operation, a healthy boy was born, whom the parents named Matviiko. The mother’s condition after the intervention is satisfactory; she feels well and thanks the medical team for their help.
The doctors of the Mother and Child Clinic stress that women with postoperative scars or a tendency to develop hernias should be monitored regularly during pregnancy. If pain appears in the abdomen or groin, it is essential to seek medical advice without delay, so that any possible complications can be identified in good time and the optimal treatment strategy chosen.
