Complex intrauterine foetal surgery performed in Lviv at 16 weeks of pregnancy

At the Lviv Regional Clinical Perinatal Centre, doctors together with their Polish colleagues carried out a complex intrauterine surgical intervention on a foetus at the 16th week of pregnancy. According to the doctors, the operation gave a chance to save the life of the unborn child.

The foetus was found to have a severe congenital malformation of the urinary system, which led to a critical reduction in the amount of amniotic fluid. Owing to the life-threatening condition, the doctors acted without delay and performed intrauterine stenting under ultrasound guidance.

The operation involved specialists from the Lviv Regional Perinatal Centre and Professor Przemysław Kosiński from the Clinical Centre of the Medical University of Warsaw. After the intervention, the patient remains under medical supervision; ahead lie further monitoring of the course of the pregnancy, delivery and subsequent treatment of the child.

The director of the institution, Maria Malachynska, stressed the importance of developing foetal surgery in Lviv.

«Such clinical cases prove that foetal surgery is about life. We are introducing innovative approaches so that every child, even before birth, can receive high-quality medical care and have a chance of full development», — Maria Malachynska
