The First Medical Association of Lviv has carried out its 700th transplant. The milestone procedure was a living-related kidney transplant for a 27-year-old patient with kidney failure, whose mother agreed to become his donor.
The young man learned of his diagnosis only two months ago. Thanks to his close relative donating a kidney, he was able to avoid dialysis. This type of operation, when an organ is transplanted before the start of renal replacement therapy, is known to doctors as a pre-dialysis transplant. Doctors stress that this is the best option for patients with kidney failure, as it preserves a higher quality of life and increases the chances of successful recovery.
The operation went well: the kidney transplanted from the mother is already functioning fully in her son’s body, and both donor and recipient are feeling well.
“For us, this is a small celebration. We were preparing materials for a conference, analysing our performance, and realised that we had just carried out our 700th transplant. Behind each one is a life saved, and this is the achievement of our entire team,” said Maksym Ovechko, head of the Transplantation Centre of the First Medical Association of Lviv.
The first transplant at St Panteleimon Hospital, which is part of the First Medical Association of Lviv, was performed in 2020. As early as 2021, the hospital opened its own Transplantation Centre. Since then, for the fifth year in a row, the medical team has maintained its leading position in Ukraine in terms of the number of transplants performed.
During this time, specialists at the centre have, in particular, carried out:
- 510 kidney transplants, 175 of which were living-related;
- 86 heart transplants;
- 92 liver transplants from deceased donors and a further 6 from living-related donors;
- lung transplants, pancreas transplants and complex operations involving the transplantation of several organs at once.
In total, the First Medical Association of Lviv has already performed 700 transplants, giving patients the chance of a full life thanks to organ transplantation.
