From 2 to 6 June, the Lviv community will hold a citywide preventive campaign, “Health Week”. Over the course of five days, at 29 locations in different parts of the city, residents will be able to undergo basic check-ups and receive medical consultations free of charge. Most tents will operate from 11:00 to 18:00.
During the campaign, Lviv residents will be offered blood pressure measurement, blood glucose testing, an electrocardiogram, assessment of cardiovascular disease risks, HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B and C testing, eyesight and intraocular pressure checks, a digital screening for diabetic retinopathy, a dermatological examination, dental consultation, colour vision deficiency screening, as well as test strips to determine blood group and Rhesus factor. ECGs will be carried out directly in ambulances.
The organisers are working to ensure that neurologists and neurophysicians also join the campaign, along with additional modern screening tests. As is traditional, medical institutions of the Lviv community will take part in “Health Week”: territorial medical associations, municipal diagnostic and treatment centres and dental polyclinics.
Head of the Healthcare Department of Lviv City Council, Marta Matiushko, noted that the campaign is aimed at the early detection of conditions a person may not notice for a long time, since high blood pressure, impaired blood sugar levels or early eyesight changes often have no clear symptoms. According to her, timely diagnosis helps prevent serious illness and preserve health.
Director of the Department of Humanitarian Policy of LCC, Valentyna Bartoshyk, recalled that last year “Health Week” in Lviv was held twice — in June and October. On those occasions, more than 17,000 people underwent free examinations, and specialists recorded abnormal readings in almost every third participant — most often elevated blood pressure, blood glucose levels or cardiovascular risk factors. Some participants received emergency care on the spot.
As part of this year’s campaign, eyesight screening for diabetic retinopathy risks using a fundus camera will for the first time be available in the tents. The procedure is contactless and painless, and the results are planned to be provided using elements of artificial intelligence. Visitors will also be offered workshops on proper oral hygiene and given flyers for professional hygiene at the dental polyclinic, and dermatologists will be on hand.
