Over the past 12 weeks, 179 injured e-scooter users have sought treatment at medical facilities in Lviv. Almost half of those injured are children, doctors report.
Of the total number of casualties, 88 are children and 91 are adults. Some people sought help on their own, while others were taken to hospital by emergency medical teams.
Fifty-eight people required hospitalisation, including 55 children. Doctors stress that a significant proportion of these cases could have been prevented if safety rules had been followed and protective equipment used.
Doctors are appealing primarily to parents, asking them not to allow children to use e-scooters without a helmet, adult supervision and compliance with the Highway Code. In particular, a helmet and moderate speed can significantly reduce the risk of serious injury.
Lviv has already tightened the rules for using e-scooters and other forms of micromobility. The new regulations set a minimum user age of 16, require the wearing of protective helmets, limit speed to 15 km/h in potentially hazardous areas, and introduce more orderly parking for such vehicles.
The Lviv City Council emphasises that these additional safety measures have been introduced in response to the rising number of injuries associated with the use of e-scooters, especially among children.
