In Lviv, a Woman’s Smile Was Restored After 12 Years of Paralysis

A young woman with facial paralysis found doctors in Lviv who restored her smile.

Lviv’s reconstructive surgeons at Saint Pantaleon Hospital took up the challenging case. **Halyna Kovtun** from Kremenchuk underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor in 2013, which led to the paralysis of the right side of her body. _”They removed the tumor. After the operation, my right hand, leg, and face were paralyzed. I couldn’t do anything on my own – neither swallow nor speak,”_ she shares.

For over 10 years, Halyna sought help to restore her facial nerve. On doctors’ advice, she turned to specialists at Lviv’s Saint Pantaleon Hospital. **The surgeons decided to help Halyna and scheduled an operation.** _”The patient had facial nerve paralysis… We performed a complex operation,”_ notes the center’s head Hnat Herych.

The complex multi-team operation lasted over six hours and ended successfully. _”It was a quite complex operation… We are glad everything went well,”_ says oncologic reconstructive surgeon Ruslan Salyenko.
