Roman entered the NEZLAMNI center on crutches, and within a week left without them: the story of a defender who lost a leg while saving his brothers

In the NEZLAMNI National Rehabilitation Center of the First Medical Association of Lviv, a prosthesis was fitted to Roman Poltavets, a 37-year-old soldier from Kharkiv who lost his leg in the war. Only a week has passed since the defender entered the center on crutches and left without them.

Roman Poltavets is a military man from Kharkiv Oblast. He joined the army at the beginning of March. He says that who will defend his city if not him.

On June 19, during a counteroffensive, a group of Ukrainian soldiers moved towards a village occupied by the enemy. Roman noticed the string hidden in the letter, stopped and warned all his comrades about the danger, letting them go ahead. Yes, they remained unharmed, but he was not. An explosion rang out and the soldier realized that his right leg was gone. The comrades rushed to help and, despite the artillery fire of the Russians and Roman’s request to leave him, they brought the wounded man to the nearest village. From there, he was taken by ambulance to the hospital – already for amputation.

Most of all, Roman Poltavets admits, he was afraid that his wife would leave him. The man dared to confess to her about the injury only on the third day. However, despite the fighter’s apprehension, the woman became a real support for him.

As soon as Roman learned about the NEZLAMNI National Rehabilitation Center and the prosthetics program, he came to Lviv. A team of surgeons, prosthetists, rehabilitation specialists and psychotherapists determined that the man was ready for a prosthesis and began work.

“From the moment when Roman entered the Center on crutches and left without them, only a week passed,” doctors say.

Now the man is learning to live in a new way.

We will remind you that the prosthetics program at the First Medical Association of Lviv started working recently. Several Ukrainians have already received their first prostheses. To join the fundraising for modern bionic prostheses, go to the link: https://dobro.ua/project/unbroken/
