A fragment of a mine hit his head, stuck in the left hemisphere of his brain and paralyzed his body. Despite the disappointing forecasts, the defender was able not only to win the right to life, but also to recover. Specialists of the NEZLAMNI National Rehabilitation Center in Lviv helped the soldier get back on his feet.
28-year-old Roman Kovalyk from Lviv. He was a cook before the Great War. He came to the defense of Ukraine in the first days of the full-scale invasion. He served in the Donetsk direction, where he was seriously wounded. That night, Roman and his brother had to go on combat duty. On the way to the trench, the comrade stepped on a mine and died on the spot. Roman fell and realized that he could not feel the right half of his body, could not speak or help himself. He was saved by his comrades, when they went in search of two fighters who did not come on duty and for some reason do not get in touch.
At first, Roman thought that the enemies were approaching. Therefore, he took the grenade in his hands and was ready to pull out the check, when he suddenly heard a familiar voice. Brothers took Roman to the nearest stabilization point. There, he was given first aid and urgently sent to Dnipro – in serious condition, with a fragment of a mine in his head. The fragment hit the frontal part, stuck in the left hemisphere of Roman’s brain and caused immobilization of the body and loss of speech.
Dnipro surgeons removed fragments of a Russian projectile and multiple bone fragments, and also closed a tissue defect in the skull. After the operation, Roman was sent to Kyiv. The mother came to the capital hospital to see the seriously wounded soldier. Doctors’ forecasts were disappointing. But Roman suddenly came to his senses and chose his life. However, he was still paralyzed and unable to speak. After the stabilization of the condition, the defender was sent to Lviv, to the NEZLAMNI center.
“Our doctors recall that Roman could not move any part of his body and did not speak. We faced a challenge. For five months, a team of rehabilitation specialists worked with the defender: physical and occupational therapists, speech therapists. The result is amazing! Now Roman is already talking and walking. He chose his right to a full life! And we treat, rehabilitate, and provide prosthetics to Ukrainians in Ukraine”, – it is noted in the Nezlamna center of the First Medical Association of Lviv.
