A unique case: Lviv surgeons saved a 41-year-old woman in labor

After the birth of the fifth child, the woman’s ovarian artery ruptured and she lost two liters of blood. Doctors of the St. Panteleimon Hospital of the First Medical Association of Lviv saved the woman in labor. This is a unique case, because in Ukrainian scientific sources there is no information about this location of the aneurysm, in English-speaking sources – about 30 cases are described.

The woman gave birth to her son Mykhailo in one of the Lviv maternity hospitals. But on the third day, getting up in the middle of the night to feed the baby, she felt a sudden unbearable pain in her stomach and called for help. The woman was urgently taken to the St. Panteleimon Hospital by ambulance.

Computed tomography showed that the woman in labor had ruptured an ovarian artery aneurysm. The aneurysm, that is, the thickening of the vessel, was 3×5 cm in size. Heavy bleeding began. Due to the unusual location of the aneurysm, the woman lost two liters of blood – all the blood collected in the retroperitoneal space between the spine and internal organs, forming a giant hematoma. This, in fact, saved the woman’s life, because it gave her time to take her to the hospital.

However, under the pressure of the hematoma, the membranes of the retroperitoneal space could rupture at any moment. This would lead to sudden cardiac arrest. It was necessary to operate immediately.

The surgery lasted two hours. Doctors managed to stop the bleeding. Together with the aneurysm, the left ovary had to be removed. The woman spent four days in intensive care. Then she was transferred to the ward of the Surgery Center.

Within a week, the woman went home, where her newborn son and the whole family were waiting for her.
