Large-scale vaccination of wild animals against rabies begins in Drohobych region

Almost 3,000 doses of rabies vaccine for wild animals will be distributed by ground method (by hand) in the population centers of Drohobytsky district.

Large-scale vaccination begins on September 13 as part of the autumn campaign of oral immunization of wild animals against rabies. The relevant decision was made on Tuesday, September 11, by the Drohobytskyi District Military Administration at a meeting of the State Emergency Anti-epidemic Commission chaired by Roman Shlyarp, the first deputy of the RVA.

In the district, 5 working groups for the distribution of vaccine baits will be created, which will include veterinarians, specialists of local self-government bodies, experts of forestry and hunting farms, and users of hunting grounds. One working group will work in each community.

As noted by the experts of the State Production and Consumer Service, a total of 2,975 doses were planned, which will be distributed in the region on an area of 119 square kilometers, in particular in fields and forest lands, on both sides of roads and outside settlements and reservoirs.

“The terrestrial method of vaccination of wild animals is being used for the first time in the Drohobytsky district. In the past, the vaccine was distributed by civilian aviation, but under the legal regime of martial law, the use of aviation is prohibited, so members of the task force in each community will distribute it by hand. This is a very important measure to prevent the spread of rabies, because since the beginning of the year, as many as 14 such cases have been recorded in Drohobych region,” said Roman Shlyarp, the first deputy head of the Drohobych RVA.

On average, 25 baits are calculated for 1 square kilometer, which have the appearance of 3×5 briquettes with a specific smell. Where rabies outbreaks have been reported, more vaccine will be distributed at a distance. While eating, the animal bites the capsule and thus receives the vaccination.

Residents of the area are asked not to take the bait with their hands, not to destroy it and not to transfer it to other places.
