Over the past 10 weeks, 143 injured e-scooter riders have sought treatment at medical facilities in Lviv. According to doctors, more than half of them are children.
Among those injured, 74 were children and 69 were adults. Some people came to hospital on their own, while others were brought in by emergency medical crews. In total, ambulances brought 60 e-scooter riders, 47 of whom were children.
Forty-five of those injured required hospital treatment. The overwhelming majority of them were underage: 42 children who had been riding e-scooters were admitted.
Doctors stress that a significant proportion of these injuries could have been prevented by following basic safety rules. This primarily concerns the use of protective gear, especially helmets, as well as careful riding and compliance with the Highway Code.
Doctors are also appealing to parents to keep a closer eye on how their children use e-scooters and not to allow them to ride without proper protection and adult supervision.
Earlier, Lviv authorities tightened the rules for using e-scooters and other forms of micromobility. The new regulations set a minimum user age of 16, make protective helmets mandatory, limit speeds to 15 km/h in potentially hazardous areas, and introduce more orderly parking rules for such vehicles.
The city council explains that these additional safety requirements were introduced in response to a growing number of injuries linked to e-scooter trips, particularly among children.
