4 September 2024 the Velyki Mosty community lost its defender — Petro Ihorovych Romanchuk. The serviceman was killed in action fighting for Ukraine near the settlement of Oleksandrivka in the Korenevsky district of Russia’s Kursk region.
Petro Romanchuk was born on 13 July 1985 in Velyki Mosty and later lived in the village of Borove. He studied at the Velyki Mosty school and, after graduating, worked as a machine operator at the Rata furniture factory.
In 2007 he married. Together with his wife, he raised his son Oleh and daughter Natalia. His family remember him as a loving father, son and brother, a person who was respected and cherished by those close to him.
On 10 May 2024, Petro Romanchuk was called up for military service under mobilisation. He joined the ranks of the air assault battalion of military unit A2582, where he served as a rifleman and assistant grenade launcher operator. His comrades-in-arms remember him as a brave, reliable warrior who was always ready to come to the rescue.
While carrying out a combat mission, Petro Romanchuk was killed at the age of 39. The warrior was laid to rest with military honours in his native Velyki Mosty.
He is survived by his son, daughter, mother and sister with her family. For them, as they recall, the years since his death have been a time of painful emptiness and of waiting for a meeting with him, if only in their dreams.
For his personal courage and selfless service to the people of Ukraine, Petro Romanchuk was posthumously awarded the Order “For Courage”, 3rd Class, by Decree of the President of Ukraine dated 23 October 2024. He was also posthumously granted the honorary title “Hero of the Velyki Mosty Territorial Community”.
The Velyki Mosty community preserves the memory of Petro Romanchuk as a loving father and son, a devoted comrade-in-arms and a true defender of Ukraine.
