How to Make an Overnight Flight Easier: Tips from a Seasoned Traveller

Overnight flights (red-eye flights), when the aircraft departs in the evening and arrives in the morning, are a common option for intercontinental journeys to Europe, South America, the Middle East, Asia or Australia. However, the first day after such a trip often passes in a haze of fatigue and lack of sleep. The author shares several tried-and-tested strategies that help make the experience easier.

One effective option is to book a hotel room for daytime use. Some chains allow you to book a room just for a few hours during the day immediately after arrival. For example, a room at the Hampton by Hilton Dublin City Centre was booked via the WorkSpaces by Hilton platform after an overnight flight to Dublin. This approach made it possible to have a shower, get a bit of rest and then head out to explore the city after lunch, without waiting for the standard check-in time. For such short stays, you may even earn extra loyalty programme points and additional ‘elite’ nights.

If paying for a separate day room does not make sense, you can try to use your status with a hotel chain or the perks of your bank cards. Some premium credit cards, including American Express with access to the Fine Hotels + Resorts programme, offer the possibility of early check-in — typically from around 12:00, subject to availability. Similar privileges are also found in hotel loyalty schemes, where guests with higher status are offered more flexible check-in and check-out times.

Even without special programmes, it is sometimes enough simply to ask politely at reception for an early check-in. The author recalls a case when, after a 17-hour flight to Singapore, they were checked in as early as 8 a.m., as rooms were available and the staff were happy to help.

Another way to recover quickly after an overnight flight is to use the showers in an airport lounge. Many international airports have business lounges and separate lounges equipped with shower facilities. This is especially convenient when you are connecting to another flight: you can freshen up, change clothes and then continue your journey without the feeling that you will have to spend the whole day in the same outfit you slept in on the plane. Some airlines also operate dedicated arrival lounges for passengers who have already arrived at their destination and passed through formalities.

For those who want to avoid overnight flights altogether, there is an alternative — daytime flights from the US to Europe. Although most flights from the US to Europe operate overnight, some airlines offer morning departures with evening arrivals local time. For example, American Airlines, British Airways, JetBlue and Virgin Atlantic operate daytime flights from John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) to London (LHR); British Airways from Boston (BOS) to London; United Airlines from Newark (EWR) to London. The author notes that after such a daytime flight they were able to almost completely avoid jet lag, although they did have to book a hotel night on arrival straight away.

Another tip is to keep an eye out for upgrade offers. Getting a business class seat with a lie-flat bed does not always mean spending thousands of dollars. Airlines are increasingly offering paid or mileage upgrades after the original ticket has been purchased. Sometimes the rates for such upgrades are quite reasonable. The article describes an example where economy class tickets on an American Airlines flight from New York to Scotland were later supplemented with a paid offer to move to the new Flagship Suites business class: after a price reduction, the author managed to secure a confirmed upgrade for around $600 per person, which significantly improved the quality of the overnight flight.

Alongside these approaches, there are other recommendations relating to sleep patterns, nutrition and overall wellbeing on the road, which help to reduce the effects of jet lag. The author emphasises that proper planning — from choosing the right flight to making smart use of hotel and card benefits — can make the first day after an overnight flight far more comfortable.
