The main reason for the injuries of cyclists in the Lviv region is non-compliance with the requirements of the Traffic Rules

Since the beginning of May, 7 road accidents involving cyclists have occurred on the roads of Lviv and the region, as a result of which 5 people were injured

Attention cyclists! To avoid the fatal consequences of non-compliance with the requirements of the Traffic Rules, we remind you:

Persons who have reached the age of 14 are allowed to ride roads on bicycles. The cyclist has the right to drive a two-wheeled vehicle, which is equipped with an audible signal and reflectors: white in front, orange on the sides, red on the back. To ride in the dark and in conditions of poor visibility on the bike must be installed and turned on the lantern (headlight). If possible, use personal safety equipment: helmet, knee pads and elbow pads, and be sure to follow the requirements of signs, markings and traffic lights.

According to item 6.6 of the Traffic Regulations of Ukraine the cyclist is forbidden:

  • to drive a bicycle with a faulty brake, an audible signal, and in the dark and in conditions of insufficient visibility – with the lamp (headlight) off or without retro-reflectors;
  • to move on highways and roads for cars, as well as the carriageway, when there is a bicycle path nearby;
  • move on sidewalks and footpaths (except for children under 7 years of age on children’s bicycles under adult supervision);
  • hold on to another vehicle while driving;
  • ride without holding the steering wheel and take your feet off the pedals (steps);
  • to carry passengers by bicycle (except for children under 7 years of age, who are transported on an additional seat equipped with securely fastened footrests);
  • tow other bicycles and trailers not intended for bicycle operation.

We appeal separately to motorists, who often allow themselves to ignore their colleagues – drivers of two-wheeled vehicles. Cyclists are the same road users as you – so the requirements of the Traffic Rules of Ukraine apply to them, as well as to you. And non-compliance with these requirements is an administrative offense, and in some cases (for example, you have an accident with the victims) – even a criminal offense, for which you are liable to several years in prison. We advise you not to forget about it!
