Resident of Brody sentenced to 10 years for attempting to kill serviceman with grenade

A 48-year-old resident of Brody has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for attempting to kill a serviceman using a grenade, as well as for unlawful handling of explosive munitions. This was reported by the Zolochiv District Prosecutor’s Office.

It was established that in November last year the accused, being intoxicated, came to the home of a 40-year-old serviceman who was on leave at the time. In the yard, an argument broke out between the men over borrowed construction equipment that the guest refused to return.

When the serviceman tried to leave in order to avoid further conflict, the accused took a grenade out of his trouser pocket, pulled out the pin and threw it at the victim. Thanks to his military training, the man managed to jump aside and hide behind an earth embankment, which enabled him to avoid injury. After the explosion, he called the police.

The actions of the accused were classified as a completed attempted premeditated murder committed in a manner dangerous to the lives of many people, as well as unlawful handling of explosive munitions (Part 2 of Article 15 – Point 5 of Part 2 of Article 115, Part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The pre-trial investigation was carried out by investigators of Police Division No. 1 of the Zolochiv District Police Department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Lviv Region. The court’s verdict will enter into legal force after the expiry of the time limit for lodging an appeal.
