At the Shehyni–Medyka checkpoint in Lviv region, customs officers stopped an attempt to illegally export to Poland 6,470 packs of cigarettes worth around UAH 700,000. This was reported on the basis of materials from Lviv Customs and under the procedural guidance of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
According to the investigation, at the beginning of May this year, a 50-year-old resident of Berdychiv, driving a Peugeot Boxer minibus, attempted to take tobacco products out of Ukraine, having previously illegally purchased them on the territory of the state. The man planned to sell them abroad.
During an inspection of the vehicle, customs officers discovered the entire consignment of cigarettes and stopped the attempt to transport them across the border. The total value of the seized tobacco products, according to preliminary estimates, is around UAH 700,000.
The driver has been notified of suspicion of illegal acquisition for the purpose of sale, as well as transportation for the purpose of sale of illegally manufactured tobacco products under Part 1 of Article 204 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by the Territorial Department of the Bureau of Economic Security in Lviv region.
Pursuant to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime until his or her guilt is proven in accordance with the law and confirmed by a conviction of the court.
