On the bank of a pond near the village of Velyke Kolodno in Lviv district, an object resembling an obsolete piece of ordnance was discovered. This happened in the evening, when a drop in the water level brought the dangerous object to the surface.
The man who noticed the suspicious object did not approach it and immediately informed the rescue service. A community rescue officer arrived at the scene and determined that the object found was likely a 120 mm mortar shell dating back to the Second World War.
To keep people safe, rescuers put up warning signs near the find and arranged for further action by the relevant services.
Rescuers stress that munitions from past wars still pose a deadly danger today. They are often found during earthworks, in forests and fields, as well as on the banks of bodies of water, especially after the water level drops.
If you discover a suspicious object, you must not touch it, approach it, move it, dismantle it or attempt to neutralise it yourself. You should move away to a safe distance, warn other people and immediately call the Rescue Service on 101.
