Second World War mortar round found in forest near Bortiatyn in Yavoriv district

In a forest near the village of Bortiatyn in Yavoriv district, people came across an old piece of ordnance, outwardly resembling a mine, while they were gathering mushrooms. The incident occurred on 11 June.

A community rescue officer went to the scene. After examining the find, he determined that the object resembled an 82 mm mortar round dating back to the Second World War. To keep people safe, the rescuer cordoned off the hazardous area with warning tape and arranged for the relevant services to respond further.

Explosive ordnance disposal experts from the Lviv Mobile Rapid Response Rescue Centre of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine removed the mortar round and destroyed it in the prescribed manner.

Rescuers remind the public that shells, mines and grenades remain dangerous even after decades. If you discover a suspicious object, you must not touch it, attempt to move it or try to neutralise it yourself. You should immediately call the Rescue Service on 101.
