The new school year in Lviv schools will not start on 1 September, but two weeks earlier – on 19 August. This decision was recommended to the Department of Education by the headquarters for winterisation in Lviv.
This is to ensure that in the event of an emergency in winter, schools can be used as points of resilience for all residents, and children have a greater guarantee of quality education at their desks throughout the school year.
“Today there is no day without power cuts. So we need to predict both good and bad things. We need to prepare for different scenarios so that Lviv can function under any conditions. Therefore, today, at a meeting of the city headquarters for winter preparation, we decided to recommend that all schools in the Lviv community start the school year on 19 August. Out-of-school educational institutions will start operating on 1 September. The tentative date for the start of winter holidays is 21 December,” said Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi.
If the electricity situation deteriorates before winter, the city’s schools will have longer winter holidays, and school premises will be used as heating points for all residents.
“We want to start school sooner for one reason – to have a greater guarantee that children will be studying at their desks. Our task is to provide children with quality offline education. We need to have a backup option so that in the event of an emergency, we can use schools as warming centres. At this time, children will also be able to be in school, in regular groups, but it will be difficult to ensure the educational process in such circumstances. Therefore, we have to be prepared for several scenarios,” says Andriy Zakalyuk, head of education in Lviv.
Both private and public schools in the city will be advised to start training sooner.
