Sweden to Allocate 4 Million SEK for Pre-Construction Phase of UNBROKEN Surgical Building in Lviv

This week in Stockholm, Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi and Swedfund CEO Maria Håkansson signed a significant cooperation agreement.

As part of the deal, Sweden will provide funding totaling 4 million Swedish kronor (approximately 9 million UAH) to support the development of a new surgical wing at the UNBROKEN rehabilitation center in Lviv.

Mayor Sadovyi emphasized that this initiative not only strengthens ties with the Swedish city of Uppsala but also marks a major step forward in improving Lviv’s medical infrastructure. The allocated funds will be used for a feasibility study and investment attraction process — a critical first phase under Ukraine’s public-private partnership regulations.

Additionally, the Lviv delegation held a series of meetings with representatives from SALAR — the Swedish Association of Local and Regional Authorities, which includes all municipalities and regions across Sweden. Their joint efforts aim to help Ukrainian communities adapt and grow even amidst wartime conditions.

Other key meetings in Stockholm included discussions with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), Swedish Minister of Health Acko Ankarberg Johansson, the special envoy on Ukraine, representatives from Getinge, and the leadership of Karolinska University Hospital.

According to the Lviv City Investment and Project Department, the planned UNBROKEN surgical building will be an eight-story facility — featuring two underground and six above-ground levels. It will combine concrete cores with wooden structures and exclude metal joints within, promoting eco-friendliness, durability, and rapid assembly.

The architectural concept was designed by world-renowned Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. The project uniquely blends Ukrainian building materials with advanced Japanese construction technologies, with adaptation to Ukrainian standards managed by a local architecture and engineering firm.
