In Lviv, preparations are under way for possible disruptions to heat supply in winter, and a wide-ranging system of backup heating for social institutions is being created.
By the end of the year, more than 70 wood-fired boiler houses are to be installed next to city schools. Together with the backup boilers already planned for hospitals and other institutions, this amounts to roughly a hundred alternative sources of heat.
At the start of the heating season, all the backup boiler houses in Lviv are to be started up simultaneously, in order to test how they perform in real conditions and to make sure the system is reliable.
According to the city authorities, the backup heat sources are being created so that even in the event of possible strikes on heating infrastructure, children can continue their studies in warm classrooms and residents have safe locations where they can warm up. The city stresses that it is preparing for different scenarios for getting through the heating season, while hoping that the most difficult of them will not materialise.
