Specialists from Lviv conducted an extraordinary operation, helping an 11-year-old boy achieve a new lease of life. The donor for Yurchyk was a 13-year-old teenager who died in an accident. The operation was performed by doctors from the centre for transplantation and the hospital of Saint Nicholas.
Smiling Yurchyk, along with his mother Iryna and the medical team, posed in the hospital lobby against a backdrop of vibrant decorations. Since the age of 4, the boy had suffered from nephrotic syndrome that had developed following tonsillitis.
Due to this syndrome, he experienced kidney complications necessitating continuous therapy and haemodialysis, which he underwent every other day for three years. The intense ordeal ended in March when the family received the news about the donor.
Yurchyk’s mother, Iryna, granted permission for the deceased donation, responding to the kindness of the parents of the 13-year-old donor: “Immensely grateful to his parents who saved my child”.
The Centre for Transplantation in Lviv has practised the highest number of transplants in Ukraine for five consecutive years, saving hundreds of lives. Over forty transplants were performed here in the first three months of this year.
