Kidney from Novovolynsk Saved the Life of a Teenager from Chernivtsi

The kidney of a 34-year-old donor from Novovolynsk became a lifeline for 15-year-old Edoardo from Chernivtsi. The transplant was carried out at the Children’s Medical Centre, where the boy was under medical supervision and received specialised treatment.

Edoardo was admitted to the Centre a year and a half ago due to a genetic kidney disease – Fanconi nephronophthisis. His parents took care of his health, but when the disease reached its terminal stage, he was referred to the Children’s Nephrology Clinic.

Until December last year, the boy was on peritoneal dialysis. Just before Christmas, he contracted an intestinal infection that led to fungal peritonitis. His condition worsened, so he was urgently transferred to the Centre.

Nephrologist Olena Klub explained that the medical team stabilised Edoardo’s condition, but peritoneal dialysis had to be replaced with haemodialysis. After stabilisation, a donor kidney became available, and the boy was transferred to Lviv for the transplant.

The operation was successful, and the recovery period passed without complications. Edoardo has already been discharged home. The teenager is grateful for the support of his family and friends, and his parents express their gratitude to the donor’s family for their important decision.
