The Clinical Centre of Paediatric Medicine in Lviv has now carried out its 30th cochlear implant operation. The procedure was performed at the Otorhinolaryngology Clinic of the municipal non-profit enterprise of the Lviv Regional Council “Clinical Centre of Paediatric Medicine”.
This time the implant was fitted for two-year-old Makar from Vinnytsia. The boy has Down syndrome and an increased risk of hearing impairment. The operation had to be postponed because of frequent middle ear infections, so doctors first inserted ventilation tubes, after which the child’s condition improved and it became possible to proceed with the implantation.
The Head of the Otorhinolaryngology Clinic, Fedir Yurochko, noted that cochlear implants have been performed at the Centre of Paediatric Medicine since June 2023, and this area is developing rapidly. Since the beginning of this year alone, 12 such operations have already been carried out here.
Professor Yaroslav Shydlovskyi from Poznań (Poland) joined the Lviv team, providing consultative support during the surgical intervention.
Makar now faces connection of the external part of the implant and further rehabilitation. The medical team plans to monitor the boy’s response to sounds and his subsequent development after the operation.
