A Model for Ukrainian Transplantology Being Developed in Lviv

In Lviv, a strategic international partnership has been initiated to develop a new model for transplant assistance. The initiative, led by the Global Medical Knowledge Alliance (GMKA) in collaboration with the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and the First Medical Association of Lviv, aims to advance liver transplantation. This is one of the most complex areas of medicine, requiring teamwork and modern solutions.

Participants, including Professor Alan N. Langnas and Dr Jacqueline Dauch, visited St Panteleimon and St Nicholas hospitals, where they discussed key developmental directions for the medical programme and launched a long-term mentorship scheme. The initiative aims to make the experience from Lviv accessible to other regions. Inesa Guivanyuk, GMKA’s Co-Executive Director, highlights the importance of this experience in improving access to quality medical care.

As part of the visit, the parties identified areas for further development, including transplant hepatology, complex vascular reconstructions, interventional radiology, and a modern data collection system. This will help improve the quality of care, making it more accessible to everyone. Maksym Ovechko, Head of the Transplantation Centre, believes the experience of colleagues from UNMC will be invaluable for Ukrainian medicine.

Thanks to this collaboration, Ukraine can embark on the path towards achieving international standards in transplantology, which is critically important for further development of the field and ensuring quality medical care throughout the country.
