Zahar, an eight-year-old boy from Ivano-Frankivsk Region, can finally return to his normal life following a successful kidney transplant. The operation was performed at the Lviv hospital “Ohmatdyt”, where he had been a patient for an extended period due to a severe chronic disease.
Back in 2023, Zahar underwent his first operation, with his grandmother being the donor. However, the transplanted organ was affected by a relapse of the disease. In August last year, doctors were forced to remove the affected kidney due to an infection. For the past six months, the child lived without kidneys, sustaining life through dialysis.
The boy finally received a new operation thanks to a posthumous donor, as reported by the Ukrainian Transplant Coordination Centre. The postoperative period proved challenging, but thanks to modern treatment methods, as noted by the clinic’s head Roman Andrunevych, the disease was halted in time.
Soon, Zahar will return home, where his family and friends await him. Special thanks are expressed to the Kryla Nadiyi Charitable Foundation for their significant support in treatment and to the donor’s family for making such a noble decision.
