Tomorrow Lviv will say goodbye to four defenders of Ukraine

On Friday, 20 September, Lviv will say goodbye to four soldiers. Volodymyr Pugolovko, Yuriy Shumalo, Yuriy Chelyapin and Viktor Grondashevsky defended Ukraine from Russian occupiers. The mayor’s office calls on people to join the city’s funeral ceremonies and refrain from holding entertainment events and celebrations during this time.

The funeral service for Volodymyr Pugolovko, Yuriy Shumal and Yuriy Chelyapin will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the Garrison Church of Ss. Peter and Paul, followed by a citywide farewell ceremony on Rynok Square. The defenders will be buried at Lychakiv Cemetery.

The funeral service for Viktor Hrondashevskyi will take place at 14:00 in the Garrison Church of Ss. Peter and Paul, followed by a citywide farewell ceremony on Rynok Square. The soldier will be buried at Lychakiv Cemetery.

Volodymyr Pugolovko (04.12.2002-09.09.2024) was a resident of Lviv.

He studied at the Taras Shevchenko Birky secondary school. Later he continued his studies at the Lviv Lyceum with enhanced military and physical training named after the Heroes of Kruty. After graduating from the lyceum, he entered the Hetman Petro Sahaidachnyi National Army Academy, Faculty of Combat Use of Forces.

He lived his life in the military and was an active sportsman in his spare time. According to his family, he was a true friend who would always support him in a difficult moment.

With the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, he stood up to defend the state from the occupiers. Since 2024, he has performed combat missions to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Motherland as part of a unit of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine. He fought against the occupiers in the Kharkiv region.

Volodymyr Pugolovko is survived by his parents, sister, grandparents.

Yurii Shumalo (21.09.1988-10.09.2024) was a resident of Lviv.

He studied at the secondary school №67 in Lviv. He first completed his education at the former Vocational School No. 27, and then entered the Lviv Railway Transport College (today – Separate Structural Subdivision “Lviv Professional College of Transport Infrastructure of Lviv Polytechnic National University”).

For more than 15 years he worked in various positions at the Regional Branch “Lviv Railway” of the Joint Stock Company “Lviv Railway”. In his spare time, he was fond of technology and football.

With the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, he defended the state against the occupiers. He defended his homeland in Donetsk region in the ranks of the 5th Tank Brigade of the Reserve Corps of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Yurii Shumal is survived by his parents, wife and daughter.

Viktor Hrondashevskyi (02.04.1988-11.09.2024) was a resident of Lviv.

He studied at the secondary school №79 (today – Lviv Gymnasium “Yevshan”). Later he received vocational education in Lviv.

After graduation, he worked in various fields. In his spare time, he was actively involved in tennis.

With the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, he defended the state from the occupiers. He defended the territorial integrity and independence of the state in the ranks of the 68th separate hunting brigade named after Oleksa Dovbush of the operational command “West” of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Viktor Hrondashevskyi is survived by his parents and sister.

Yurii Cheliapin (14.07.1968-12.09.2024) was a resident of Lviv.

He studied at the secondary school №48 in Lviv. Lviv. He graduated from the Faculty of Chemistry at Lviv Polytechnic National University.

After graduating, he first worked as a supply engineer at Lviv Bus Plant Limited Liability Company, and later became a private entrepreneur.

With the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, he stood up to defend the state from the invaders. He defended the sovereignty and independence of his homeland in Donetsk and Kharkiv regions as part of the 111th separate territorial defence brigade of the East Regional Directorate of the Territorial Defence Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Yuriy Chelyapin is survived by three daughters, a brother, a granddaughter, nephews and ex-wives.
