In Lviv, the memorial plaque honouring Dzhokhar Dudayev has been reinstated after it was stolen. The thieves who removed the plaque have been identified and will face justice. This was reported by the Executive Committee’s manager of Lviv City Council, Yevhen Boyko.
On the light facade of the building, the black plaque with the street name — Dzhokhar Dudayev, as well as the commemorative plaque with his portrait and a brief text about him, is now visible again. The reinstatement was made possible thanks to the swift work of the police.
Boyko emphasised: “We unveiled it two weeks ago, but within days it disappeared. As the events have shown, you can’t unscrew memory and respect in Lviv. Dudayev is a symbol of resistance to Russian aggression, he understood the nature of the Russian state even before this war.”
Dzhokhar Dudayev (1944–1996) was a Major General of Aviation, the first president of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. He supported Ukraine’s independence and became a symbol of resistance. After being elected president of the Chechen Republic, he declared its independence. He was killed on 21 April 1996 following a missile strike by Russian special forces.
