In the city of Lviv, new trees and shrubs began to be planted in the spring on the grounds of 21 educational institutions with the aim of greening and providing shade. This year, such work is taking place in schools and kindergartens, and the first Royal Red maples have already taken root at Lyceum No 45.
Before planting, the area is checked for hazardous trees. “Children need shade, so mainly trees like maples, larches, tulip trees, as well as firs and magnolias are being planted,” said Oksana Lutsko, Deputy Head of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Lviv City Council.
Institutions most in need of greening received free compost from LKP “Green City”. The work is being carried out by municipal enterprises together with students, who are actively participating in the process.
The initiative has been joined by: General Secondary Education Institution No 87 named after Iryna Kalynets, Secondary School No 62, Secondary School No 34 named after Markiyan Shashkevych, Lyceum No 45, and Lyceum “Nadiya”, among others. In addition, the “Gift a Child a Tree” campaign is ongoing in Lviv, organised jointly with the Department of Ecology and other organisations.
