Vynnyky: exploring the potential for the restoration of a water mill

In Vynnyky on the Marunka River, research is being conducted which could lead to the restoration of the historic water mill and the creation of a micro hydroelectric power plant. The project, initiated by the Lviv City Council’s Department of Ecology, is funded through the Interreg Europe programme.

The funding is intended exclusively for research work, and the implementation of the project is planned for the future with investor support. “Our goal is to study how this facility operated previously, preserve its history, and assess the potential for utilising small hydropower,” said the head of the department Halyna Mykitchak.

The historical mill functioned more than 50 years ago, but during the Soviet era, it was converted to electric power and subsequently fell into disrepair. There are now plans to restore it to demonstrate its operating principles and for tourism purposes. Partners from Italy, France, and Austria, who have experience in these matters, have shown interest in the research.

Other locations within communities with the potential for water mill restoration are also being investigated. This work is carried out by specialists from the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv in cooperation with Lvivvodokanal, who have been conducting an inventory of water resources in Lviv.
