Ukrainian juniors Oleh Rybak and Maksym Kovalchuk became European champions in modern pentathlon at the continental championships held in Barcelona.
Lviv athlete Oleh Rybak claimed three gold medals at once. He finished first in the individual event, won the men’s relay together with Danylo Sych, and also stepped onto the top tier of the podium in the team competition as part of the Ukrainian national side.
In the final of the individual event, Rybak produced a spectacular finish. Before the last discipline of the programme — the laser run — he was in seventh place and trailed the leader by 34 seconds, but managed to make up the deficit and take gold.
Another gold medal for Ukraine was secured by Maksym Kovalchuk, who became European champion in the junior team event.
