
Ukrainian pentathletes Maksym Kovalchuk from Lviv region and Oleksandr Chernyshov from Kyiv region won silver medals at the U19 Modern Pentathlon World Championships held in Madrid. The athletes competed in the men’s relay.
Before the final event of the programme — the laser run — the Ukrainian duo were in seventh place. In the decisive discipline, Kovalchuk and Chernyshov managed to step up sharply, climbed five positions and finished second, securing silver at the world championships.
For Maksym and Oleksandr this is already their second consecutive medal at the World Championships among athletes under 19. In 2025 they became world champions in the team event.
Maksym Kovalchuk represents the “Olympic Training Centre”. His coaches are Vitalii Tarnakin, Oleh Fialkovych and Andrii Kovalchuk, reported the head of the Department of Sport, Youth and Tourism of the Lviv Regional Military Administration, Roman Khimiak.
