The international charity chess tournament was dedicated to the memory of the Heroes of the Russian-Ukrainian war who died at the front and went missing.
More than 250 participants, including titled grandmasters, beginners, military personnel, and children from 21 regions of Ukraine and five European countries, including the Czech Republic, Poland, Iceland, Slovenia, and Estonia, played chess. A total of eight rounds of rapid chess were played.
All tournament fees and proceeds from the charity auction were donated to the Armed Forces of Ukraine (125th TRO of Lviv and the Special Forces). In addition, the winner of the competition in the men’s category, Martyn Kravtsiv, immediately donated his prize money – UAH 20,000 – to the organizers for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
“This is a charity tournament, I am honored to do so,” said Martyn Kravtsiv, a titled athlete and graduate of the Ivan Bobersky Lviv State University of Physical Culture.
“Memorial tournaments preserve traditions and do not allow us to forget those who sacrificed themselves for the future of the country. Years later, this tournament will carry the memory of specific names. Because war losses are not numbers. They are specific people with their own stories and potential. It is our sacred duty to remember their heroism. I am grateful to the person who launched this initiative, a great patriot of Ukraine, my friend Anton Lytvynets,” said Roman Khimyak, head of the LUWA Youth and Sports Department.
