The oldest mention of the church in Prylbychy was made in 1494

Historical reference “Yavorivshchyna”

The head of the Yavorivska VA, Yaroslav Kominskyp, gives birth to a journey through the Yavoriv region in the permanent column “Heritage through the pages of the past”. Today we will learn the history of the architectural monument of the Yavoriv district, the wooden church in the village of Prylbychy – OCU Church of the Cathedral of the Most Holy Theotokos under the leadership of Metropolitan Epiphanius – Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine, Primate of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine The Orthodox parish in Prylbychy was part of the structure from the beginning of its existence Przemyśl Diocese. The oldest mention of the church in Prylbychy was made in 1494, in particular, the document shows that there was a priest in Prylbychy then, so there must have been a church, but of course the building itself is the predecessor of the one built in 1654.

The first written information about an Orthodox priest in Prylbychy dates back to 1515. Perhaps the church was really built in 1654, and was rebuilt and reconstructed by Atanas Sheptytskyi. In fact, the constructions of the extension were visible in the church building. Even the lower beam of the oak log (foundation) on the south side has traces of fire. Did it burn down in 1648? Sometime in the 60s, a protective board of the architectural monument was attached to the wall of the church by the Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments. It stated that the church was built in 1741. However, such a date of construction of the church is not mentioned in any documents, and the years of the bishopric of Athanasius Shentytskyi and the archbishop of Permyshlskyi do not coincide. On September 11, 1892, the young, newly appointed Basilian Father Andrey Sheptytsky celebrated the first Divine Liturgy in the church. Belongs to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine since 2018.

Wooden, three-log, with one bath. It consists of a mostly rectangular nave, a smaller nave and an even smaller eastern log cabin with a hexagonal apse. The unconventional alternation of volumes is explained by the later expansion of the western log house. The central log turns into a low octagon, topped by a cupola. The side volumes are covered with roofs. The building has a porch, which is supported by columns on the west side of the facade, and on the others – plastically finished crown moldings. The interior is characterized by the highly open space of the nave. The temple underwent three reconstructions in 1654. The Church of the Cathedral of the Most Holy Theotokos in the village of Prylbychy still belongs to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, where divine liturgies are held regularly. The abbot of the temple is father Ihor.
