On Sunday, 23 August, at 20:00 on Angels Square near the Garrison Church in Lviv, an installation entitled “Columns of Remembrance” will be unveiled in honour of the service personnel buried within the Lviv community. The project is by the artist Vasyl Odrekhivskyi.
The installation will be set up on the eve of Ukraine’s Independence Day as a space for commemorating fallen Defenders, both men and women. Lviv City Council notes that the “Columns of Remembrance” are intended to serve as a reminder that the story of the war is not yet over and of the high price Ukraine continues to pay.
“In wartime it is especially important to create places of remembrance that remind us of the people thanks to whom we today have the opportunity to live, work and build the future. The memory of the Heroes must be part of our city and of our everyday lives. It is particularly symbolic that the ‘Columns of Remembrance’ will open on the eve of Ukraine’s Independence Day. We invite everyone who wishes, on this evening that is important to each of us, to join the opening and together honour our Defenders,” said Tetiana Kozhokar.
The Director of the European Youth Capital Office at Lviv City Council, Tetiana Kozhokar, also stressed that the installation is temporary and mobile: it is planned to move it between different locations in Lviv in order to expand the space for remembrance and interaction among city residents.
This year, Lviv is preparing to mark the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence. From 23 to 25 August, the city has scheduled ceremonial, cultural, artistic and educational events, including the raising of the State Flag, lectures and commemorative events in honour of Ukraine’s fallen Defenders, both men and women.
