In Lviv, a screening of the film ‘Waves’ took place in celebration of the Czech Republic Day.
The film tells the story of the employees of Czechoslovak Radio who, risking their own freedom and lives, strive to uphold the right to truth and freedom of speech. The screening was part of a diplomatic reception dedicated to the national holiday of the Czech Republic. Deputy Head of the Lviv Regional State Administration Khrystyna Zamula, Consul General of the Czech Republic in Lviv Jiří Bortel, residents of Lviv, and guests of the city attended the event.
‘Waves’ is a large-scale historical drama set against the backdrop of the events of the Prague Spring of 1968 and the subsequent invasion of the Warsaw Pact military into Czechoslovakia. The film is inspired by real events, particularly the story of journalists who continued broadcasting on the radio on August 21, 1968, during the Soviet occupation of Prague.
The filming took place in Prague, Plzeň, Jaroměř, at various locations in Slovakia, and in the Czech Radio building. The producer was Monika Kristlova (DAWSON Films). The film achieved great public success, becoming the most popular film of the year in the Czech Republic with over 886,000 viewers and received the ‘Czech Lion’ award for the best film of 2024. The Czech Film Academy nominated the film for an ‘Oscar’ in the ‘Best International Feature Film’ category, and it was shortlisted among the 15 nominees.
It is noteworthy that this year, the film ‘Waves’ participated in the International Festival of Audience Film ‘Mykolaichuk OPEN’ and won in the international feature film competition.
