The Days of European Heritage begin tomorrow in Lviv: what has been prepared for visitors

From September 9 to 11, European Heritage Days will be held in Lviv, the purpose of which is to draw attention to heritage and its role in society. This year’s program includes about 90 events.

“It is important to hold European Heritage Days now, because culture and history are always relevant, because without it we cannot develop as a nation. Today, despite the tragic events in our country, we have the opportunity to carry out cultural exchange between thousands of Ukrainians currently living in Lviv. European Heritage Days are about our traditions, our heritage, what we have, preserve and protect.

Days of European Heritage is a unique event that is taking place for the twelfth time in Lviv (the only city in Ukraine that has joined the EU for so many years). We are glad that the interest in these events has been very high for so many years. Despite the difficulties in organizing these events, we have prepared an incredibly interesting and rich program so that everyone will find something interesting for themselves,” says Khrystyna Lebed, head of Lviv’s tourism department.

The theme of this year’s Heritage Days in Lviv is “Lost. saved Restored.” Lviv guides, museum workers, scientists, historians, art critics, restorers will tell and introduce the history. Events will take place in a variety of formats – from lectures, excursions, master classes to concerts and poetry readings.

“The theme of heritage is very comprehensive, so every year our program expands. This year, we will talk about natural heritage on tours of arboretums, botanical gardens, and a zoological museum, and about the preservation of animals, using the example of Domazhyru and the Home of Rescued Animals, and about the people who contributed to the creation of Lviv and Ukraine. The opportunity to get to know Nova Kakhovka, namely its stone embroideries, will be unique at this year’s DEU. The topic of the fate of Lviv women during the Second World War will also be interesting. Also this year, we will show visitors the uniqueness of Yaniv cemetery.

In general, we don’t know a lot about our city, and European Heritage Days are a very good impetus to get to know it better,” says Yuliya Doliba, project coordinator.

Participants will be able to visit unique places, such as the historic premises of Lviv Radio, the restored halls of the Lviv Polytechnic, the backstage of the “Resurrection” theater and the First Theater, or the ancient cellars of the Jam Factory. Many events will take place in the open city space – tours of ancient cemeteries, parks and other natural objects, historical quarters in the city center and beyond. This year’s special event will also feature stories about well-known and little-known Lviv men and women, such as Anna Krushelnytska, Stefan Banaha, Sofia Karaffa-Korbut, Ivan Levynskyi, Zaharievichi. Considerable attention in the program is paid to the military theme and preservation of heritage.

“Days of European heritage in Lviv are unique days when Lviv residents and guests of the city can enter such chapels, which are usually closed to visitors. The Museum of Solomiya Krushelnytska has participated in the DEU for all 12 years. We conducted various excursions, showed retro cars, organized concerts with cats. Every year I try to come up with something new and interesting.

This year is special for us, because we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Solomia Krushelnytska. We had very ambitious plans for 2022, but the war prevented them from being implemented, so we are glad that during the Days of European Heritage we will be able to tell Ukrainians a little more about the cultural ambassador of our country,” said Mykhailo Kobryn, director of the Solomiya Krushelnytska Music Memorial Museum in Lviv
