A 70-year-old resident of Lviv will stand trial for arranging a fake marriage between his disabled daughter and a conscription-age man, allowing the latter to avoid mobilization.
According to law enforcement, the father coerced his daughter, who has a Group II disability and lives in vulnerable conditions due to illness and poverty, into marrying a man eligible for military service. Acting out of greed, the man facilitated the deal in 2023.
The “client” previously divorced his legal wife before entering into the sham marriage. In return for arranging the union, he paid the woman’s father an amount equivalent to ₴200,000. The newly registered marriage allowed the man to secure a legal deferment from mobilization during martial law.
The scheme was uncovered by operatives from the Migration Police Department in Lviv region in cooperation with investigators from Police Department No. 1 of the Lviv District Police and under the procedural supervision of the Frankivsk District Prosecutor’s Office.
The pre-trial investigation has been completed. The case has been submitted to court, with charges brought under Part 1 of Article 149 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (human trafficking). The defendant faces a prison sentence ranging from three to eight years.
